Growing Need for Property Tax Loans in Texas

Wednesday, 17 April 2013

Texas’ reputation as a low-tax state may be in jeopardy, according to recent published numbers from the Dallas Business Journal. With the national average lower than the amount that most Texans are paying for property tax, many homeowners may feel the burden of a larger payment.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau data, conducted by the Tax Foundation, “the average Texas homeowner pays more in property taxes than the national average.” The median annual property tax payment recently released in Texas last year was $2,275, the 14th highest in the nation, above the national average of $1,917. The release of this information ranks Texas as a higher-than-average state for property tax, putting additional stresses on home owners.

When calculated as a percent of home value, Texans paid 1.81 percent of their home’s value in property taxes, the third highest in the country, behind New Jersey and Connecticut. Collin County in particular is representative of the higher tax burden. According to the survey, the median property taxes paid on homes was $4,250, with median home value of approximately $205,000. When calculated, taxes as percentage of home value was 2.07%.
